Big Up The Lady Margaret

by Laura Nicholls

A big fashion inspiration this side of the New Year is the new movie ‘The Iron Lady’ where the darrrrling Meryl Streep undertakes the role of the Lady Margaret Thatcher our nations one and only woman Prime Minister. The tailored suits, the colour blue and the power of clothes have been highlighted and replicated in our big British fashion world. With Alexander McQueen reconstructing the fitted two-piece in a way only McQueen can, and the pencil skirt making a comeback and replacing last seasons midi- ladies, we’ve got to get classy.

The way Thatcher conducted and presented herself was very important throughout her time as our nations leader. The two-piece suits in that remarkable colour of blue became a ‘power colour’. It gained her respect and promoted her femininity.

Today fashion is about power. It gives us power that enables us to create an image that speaks for itself. An individual and unique appearance is something that fashion creates through a person’s personality.

So, LOLA has taken the classy Lady Thatcher look and fucked it right up. We are all in favour of recycling your wardrobe (maxi skirts: CUT THEM, Gran’s blouses: STEAL THEM) and alas, want to inspire you to dress like you are ruling Britain in respect of the Iron Lady. We have the two-tone tights, the Creepers (think big soles right now), the blue two-length skirt, the pussybow blouse and the vintage checkered blazer.

We want your Mother’s reaction to be ‘gosh darling, that’s different’.
